About Gin Rummy

Collect sets and runs, keep your deadwood low and choose the perfect moment to knock — or go for Gin. A quick, clever card game that is easy to learn and hard to put down.

How to play

Play against the computer and turn your ten-card hand into melds. A set contains three or four cards of the same rank; a run contains at least three consecutive cards of the same suit. Aces are low, so Ace–2–3 is valid but Queen–King–Ace is not. Each card can belong to only one meld.

Begin each turn by drawing from the stock or taking the top discard, then discard a card. You cannot immediately discard the same card you just picked up from the discard pile. Unmatched cards are deadwood: Aces count as 1, number cards count at face value, and Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 10.

After drawing, you may knock if discarding leaves 10 or fewer deadwood points. With layoff enabled, your opponent can add unmatched cards to your melds before scores are compared. You score the deadwood difference, unless your opponent finishes with equal or lower deadwood and undercuts you.

Meld all ten remaining cards to go Gin, or all eleven cards before discarding to declare Big Gin. Default bonuses are 25 for Gin and an undercut, and 35 for Big Gin. The default match target is 100 points; bonuses, layoff and the target can be adjusted in Settings.
